A genus of approx. 70 species within the cacti family (Cactaceae) native to South America. The name 'Gymnocalycium' was taken from the Greek translation "naked calyx", which referred to the hairless, spineless flower buds that form. These cacti are generally low mound forming, growing up to 5-15 cm wide depending on the species.
